Course Description

This course develops students’ understanding of shapes, transformations, and spatial reasoning through the exploration of congruence, similarity, right triangle trigonometry, coordinate methods, circles, and three dimensional figures. Students learn to analyze relationships, construct logical arguments, and apply geometric principles to real world and mathematical problems, building a strong foundation for advanced mathematics.

Units of Study

  1. Foundations of Geometry All the basic vocabulary and concepts needed for the rest of the course.

  2. Transformations Explore how shapes move on the coordinate plane through translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations.

  3. Triangle Congruence Learn what’s needed to guarantee two triangles are identical in shape and size.

  4. Polygons and Quadrilaterals Analyze properties, angles, and relationships within shapes with more than three sides.

  5. Similarity Use proportions to work with figures with the same shape, but different size.

  6. Right Triangles and Trigonometry Finding the unknown parts of a triangle using the special proportional relationships that exist in right triangles.

  7. Coordinate Geometry Use the coordinate plane to determine the properties of shapes, like distance, midpoint, and slope.

  8. Circles Learn about the angle, arc, chord, tangent, and segment relationships that define the geometry of circles.

  9. Solid Geometry Examine the properties of three-dimensional shapes, like surface area and volume.

Text and Resources

We will use the book enVision Geometry textbook as reference and for homework assignments. Due to low supply, these will stay in the classroom, but an online version exists so you can work at home. You can access that through ClassLink and the Savvas EasyBridge app.

For extra practice, I recommend Khan Academy. There is a Geometry course, as well as a Get ready for Geometry course that’s good for brushing up on old material.

Grading

  • The official grade book exists on Canvas, with Genesis only having a (possibly unreliable) copy.
  • All work is due the day of a quiz or exam and late work will receive only partial credit.
  • There are about three quizzes each marking period.
  • There is also one exam at the end of each marking period.
  • Grading is point-based. Assignments are worth roughly 10%, quizzes 40%, and the marking period exam 50% of your grade.
